Bet Tzedek means House of Justice. Bet Tzedek Legal Services provides free legal assistance to poor and low income persons, with an emphasis on senior citizens. Bet Tzedek’s 58 member staff includes 25 attorneys, 9 paralegals, 7 administrative personnel, 3 finance personnel and 14 support and clerical workers. Bet Tzedek opens more than 4,000 new client matters annually involving a wide range of civil issues, with special emphasis in landlord/tenant, consumer fraud and public benefit cases. Litigation also includes substantial impact work. Our $5 million annual budget is funded by 6 government grants, the United Way, Jewish Federation Council and a substantial fund raising drive.

Pro Bono Director

The Pro Bono Director’s duties will be delegated by the President/CEO, Human Resource Director and Director of Litigation in a major effort to increase volunteer involvement in Bet Tzedek. The Pro Bono Director will be responsible for recruiting legal and non-legal volunteers, supervising staff and directing the placement of pro bono cases, developing pro bono recruitment and training materials, developing and managing a wide range of volunteer projects, and developing partnership opportunities with law firms and in-house law departments, law schools, colleges, bar associations and the judiciary.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Pro Bono Director is a member of Bet Tzedek’s management team and reports to the Director of Litigation. The Pro Bono Director will supervise the Volunteer Liaison and Bet Tzedek legal staff on projects utilizing the assistance of our pro bono volunteers. The Pro Bono Director will be responsible for maintaining and further developing Bet Tzedek’s existing pro bono program to effectively serve client needs through performance of the following functions:

  1. Manage law firm, law school and other community outreach and recruitment for legal and non-legal volunteers including attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, expert witnesses, medical experts, investigators, interpreters, media consultants, and administrative support personnel.
  2. Develop and implement signature and other special pro bono projects with law firms and corporate legal departments.
  3. Develop and manage training programs for volunteers; develop reference and marketing materials for pro bono program.
  4. Manage Bet Tzedek’s summer and school-year clerk programs, including recruitment, hiring and budget;
  5. Serve as ongoing mentor and resource to volunteers for training and other support.
  6. Serve as resource to staff on volunteer-related issues and assist with staff-volunteer relationships as needed, including managing complaints that arise between staff and volunteers.
  7. Direct staff on the development of cases for placement and the assignment of work to volunteers.
  8. Supervise the Volunteer Liaison/Advocate and Volunteer Prescreening Supervisor; delegate administrative assignments related to the pro bono program as the PBD believes appropriate.
  9. Design and manage volunteer recognition program.
  10. Counsel and correct volunteers, including terminations, and manage all issues associated with resignations.
  11. Review, evaluate and revise Bet Tzedek’s current procedures for volunteer recruitment, placement and training as the Pro Bono Director determines appropriate.
  12. Represent Bet Tzedek on bar and other legal committees.
  13. Other duties as determined by the Director of Litigation and senior management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Minimum of (5) years experience in the practice of civil law as an attorney.
  • Demonstrated management experience or experience supervising and working effectively with colleagues and members of the legal community.
  • Familiarity with the Los Angeles legal community and the Jewish community a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the legal issues affecting low-income people.
  • Demonstrated persuasive communication and presentation skills indicative of superior ability to advocate the program’s mission.
  • Demonstrated organizational, administrative and technological skills.

Volunteers Needed: German Translators/Hungarian Translators

Volunteer German and Hungarian translators are needed to translate German or Hungarian documents related to our Holocaust Restitution Project.
We receive letters and administrative denials from one to three pages in length and need volunteer assistance in translating from German or Hungarian to English.

Volunteers with faxes may work from home or office.
